Essential oils have been used for therapeutic purposes for nearly 6,000 years. The ancient Chinese, Indians, Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans used them in cosmetics, perfumes, and drugs. Essential oils were also commonly used for spiritual, therapeutic, hygienic, and ritualistic purposes.
Nowadays we have modern laboratories to manufacture our drugs, and synthetic chemicals that replicate or attempt to replicate the natural remedies our ancestors once used. Whereas 500 years ago, they would go to the herbalist or apothecary to make them a poultice or tonic, we go to the pharmacist and buy over the counter drugs readily. However, just because this is now the norm in our society, it doesn’t mean that the wisdom and knowledge of our forebears is any less valid.
One of the things I am becoming more and more passionate about as a mother and as I learn about the alternative to synthetic remedies, is that I can turn first to natural remedies like essential oils to support my health and wellbeing and the health and wellbeing of my family. I can use them to reduce the amount of toxins my children are exposed to each day which are found in cleaning products, foods and other things we use and are normal to the general population. I love learning about the powerful variety of ways in which essential oils can be used from overhauling our medicine cabinet, cleaning our house, helping with nutrition and fitness, and in relieving symptoms of ailments to make life a little happier and easier to deal with.
You will find many ways in which essential oils can help you and your family on a path to greater wellness on this site, and in our in-person and online classes and workshops.
Why quality matters…
Why I did my aromatherapy training about 15 years ago, I was alerted to the huge variance in the quality of essential oils. To be labelled ‘pure’ they do not have to be 100% pure, meaning that it can contain a whole range of synthetic and other products.
While there is no official standard to guarantee an oil’s purity, doTERRA has trademarked the Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade logo as a sign of the quality and integrity of their oils, which are 100% pure, meaning that you can be assured that every bottle is of the highest quality and has been tested and analysed to ensure this. This quality assurance also means that the oils are safe to be ingested, they can be used as food grade oils in cooking, and are safe for all the family to use.
